Our gentle giant, Tocchet, will be going to the bridge on Tuesday, I'm afraid. We've been together since the day he was born in my girls' closet almost 19 years ago. We love him and will miss him immensely.

We have not been around for a long time, but here is an update:Our newest addition - Fleury came to us in October. As is our custom, she is named after Pittsburgh Penguin Marc-Andre Fleury (because of her 'mask').

Hello Everyone! It's been a long time. Mom works a lot now, so we don't get to blog much. This is our new brother, Baron. We weren't too sure about him at first, but we guess we love him now.

Our beloved woofie, Captain, was helped to the bridge on Monday. He was 17 1/2 years old. We will miss him forever.

Mom's been working crazy hours for the past few months, so we have only been able to take an occaisional peek to see how our friends have been doing. We've been waiting patiently, and the last tax return will be in the mail soon, so we hope to start catching up with everyone real soon!

We are purring and praying real hard for Lilly Lu, Mue Shue, Iris and mom Laura.

This is my brother & sister-in-law's cat Greta [in the foreground and on the right]. She is a gorgeous, petite, very shy girl who lives in New Hampshire. Her mom & dad have taken jobs on a cruise ship and cannot take her with them. They are desperate to find the right home for her and they have to leave on January 6th. If anyone in thinks they would like to make Greta part of their family, please email me at cpa_mccabe@hotmail.com. Ideally, we'd like to place her with a family in the New England area, but transportation can be arranged.

FYI to all who asked: Tocchet will put the bitey on anyone who tries to touch anywhere but the head or top half of his back. He is surprisingly quick for an old guy, and he has huge teeth!

Update: Thanks for the tips. Looks like the consensous is to try the Feliway. We've been using the feline pine for two years, no one seems to mind. I have three boxes in two rooms and they seem to all use the same 2 for the most part. I bought one of those pans with litter yesterday, figuring that if her problem was an infection I could put it in our evacuation kit. They ripped the cover off it right away, so I guess they like it. Maybe I'll give them variety if that's what will work.

Lemieux: Tocchet and I had a tough day today. Mom got out the carriers and took us to the V-E-T. Tocchet got a shot and I got poked at.

Mom: Tocchet had to get a rabies shot, in case we have to evacuate any time this hurricane season. Lemieux is having 'improper elimination' issues. Dr. Hassel says no infection, she's probably stressed. I thought all went well when the houseguests were here...maybe not. Anyway, I've gotten rid of the throw rugs, and I'm in the process of scrubbing (again). Does anyone have any suggestions?

My sweet friend Emma tagged me for the 7 random facts meme, so I will wake up and get to work. Here they are:
1. I was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1992, and have been with Mom from that day on.
2. I have a plate and some screws in one of my back legs, from when I got hit by a car when I was just a young stud.
3. I was quite the hunter in my younger days. Don't even ask the young girl bean about the baby bunny. I stopped hunting when I was about 10, and now I'm an indoor only kitty.
4. Compared to my Momma Cheyenne, I was WAY nicer to the little kitties that the girl beans brought home. That has earned me lots of nicknames, including Uncle Tocchy and Gentle Giant.
5. I hardly ever meow, and when I do it sounds real scratchy. I prefer to be the strong, silent type.
6. I am lots bigger than Ariel and Lemieux, but I hardly ever push them around. (They're too fast anyway).
7. I HAVE to sleep next to Mom at night, even though she says I snore. The nerve! I AM the King Kitty.

In the big scheme of things, my life is pretty low-stress, by design. Today was a sad day, mostly because my employer's cat suffered complications giving birth and lost her kittens. It was a long day too, some other family issues got more complicated, and I was pretty down when I got home.

I want to share these pictures because after just a short time checking everone's blogs this evening, I feel as relaxed as I did when I watched these sunsets.

The kitties love to go out in the yard, and I take them out most days, even if only for a few minutes. Sometimes they don't get to go out. They NEVER go out unsupervised. Am I doing this right? Would they be better off if they did not go outside at all? Lemieux cries a lot to go out when she gets bored. Sometimes I worry that they would be better off if they did not even know what outside is. I just want to be a good kitty Mom.

The Cat Who Made Me Love Cats

This is Cheyenne - aka Momma, circa 1995. Tom found her as a kitten and brought her home. When he moved out of his old apartment, he let his roommate keep her. The roommate moved on about six months later, and left Chey behind. He and my daughter Cassie went and rescued her, and brought her home to us. I still remember the first time I saw her. When I got home that evening, she was sitting in the window, behind the blinds. I parted the blinds, and was instantly in love. Shortly thereafter, Cheyenne gave birth to 4 kittens. Three of them died within the first week. The 4th is Tocchet.

Cheyenne had quite the personality. She was TOUGH. On more than one occasion she bit Captain, our dog, shown in the background. She was very vocal, and would scold me for hours every time I returned from a vacation. She had to have her own glass of water, on the kitchen counter. If it sat empty for too long, she would swat it off the counter, shattering the glass all over the floor, and we would have to come up with a new glass.

In her later years, Chey mellowed a bit, and became quite affectionate. She always laid in the crook of my arm when I watched TV at night.

In 2003 she developed tumors. Despite 2 surgeries, she went to the bridge on November 6, 2004.

Cheyenne made fall in love with cats and everthing about them. I will always be grateful.

Recuperating in My Favorite Spot

Hi Everyone! I just wanted to show everyone how much better I am. I am sitting in my favorite spot, watching the lizzards and froggies. I just had some lunch, and Mom is staying home this afternoon to keep an eye on us. Lemieux was 'not herself' yesterday, but seems better today. Mom isn't having much luck with the medicine, but she says she has a foolproof plan for tonight. [tuna juice]. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes, I will be climbing up the window screens again real soon!

As of 8:30 this morning, Ariel's temp was down to 102. She has gone to the bathroom, and took her force-feeding well. If nothing changes, she can come home at 3 PM today. I just can't wait to get her home. I swear Tocchet and Lemieux are looking for her too.

Ariel Update

Thanks to everyone for their words of comfort. Ariel is still at the hospital. Her fever was down last night, but back up this morning. They are saying it is a viral upper respitory infection. She is still receiving an IV for fluids and an antibiotic as a preventative measure. The vet said her tummy felt better today. After a 2 hour wait I finally got to see her. She seems much better than yesterday, but still a little wobbly. I tried to get her to eat, at the vet's suggestion, but it was a no go. I was not surprised. There were too many strange sounds and smells. She is not the best eater under ideal circumstances.

They wanted to keep her at least another night, so I agreed. I don't have the same peace of mind as I would with our regular vet, but if she is sick, I guess she is better off there until the ER closes and the vet opens Tuesday morning.

Thank you also for the invitation to tonight's party. It has been an emotionally exhausting weekend so far, so I am hoping for a good night of sleep tonight. Please enjoy the celebration, and I will post an update tomorrow. Happy [and healthy and safe] New Year to all!!

FIP

I only spent about 5 minutes researching FIP, just enought to overstimulate my overactive imagination. My daughter lost a precious baby after maybe a month or two. What puzzles me is this, : she thinks that her remaining cat has to be an 'only child' for the rest of his life. She is not the type to overreact, so I thik she might be misled on this one. I volunteer with an orginization at Petsmart; Idon't think they routinely test for this. What I've read is so confusing; however, I think there are meds in Europe and Asia that may not be available in the US. I will look in to this.

Update - we're hopeful!!

We visited Ariel at the vet a little while ago. She looked more alert. They said the pain meds made her feel better. At @6:30 I called, they had finished the blood work and X-rays. They said she was so good. I was not at all surprised. The Vet called as I was typing. They are still not sure what the problem is, but Ariel is improving. Her temp is down to 103.2, so she is responding to the fluids. Her blood work looks 'really good', and, not being a science person, I'll take that as a 'YES' for now. There is the possibility of pancreatitis, a viral or respitory infection, or a blood infection. For now they are going to monitor her ovenight. The doctor seemed optimistic. She said to call at 10 AM tomorrow and maybe I could bring her home.Ariel and Lemieux have always been indoor kittys. I take them out in the yard, but since daylight savings time ended, they don't get out much at all. I dealt with the abcesses with my first cat, Bullitt, and with Tocchet when he was younger. Even though I didn't think it was possible with Ariel, I checked her pretty thoroughly today.My biggest fear is FIP. My daughter Cassie lost a kitten a few months ago to this horrible didease. I had brought two kittens in on a short term basis recently, and feared the worst. I don't know too much about it, but I think I am going to learn more quite soon. My imagination got quite active and scary on the way home from the vet this afternoon. Now I don't think that is what's got Ariel, but I learned some interesting things in a few short minutes this afternoon. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and compassion. I wiil let you all know when I have more information.Ann

I just got back from the Animal ER, where I had to leave Ariel. She has a 104.5 fever and is not eating, drinking or going to the bathroom. They are starting her on an IV to get her hydrated and get the fever down, then they will do bloodwork and an X-ray. I am terrified of what it could be. She was fine yesterday, but would not move at all today. Please pray for her. She is only 2 years old, and such a good little girl.

Here is our woofie, Captain. He is getting pretty old now, but he used to give Tocchet a bath when they were young. Now he mostly sleeps, but he will let Ariel rub up on him once in a while.

Hurray!! Ariel is 2 years old. She celebrated her birthday yesterday. Daddy [her favorite bean] stayed home with her all afternoon and treated her to some whipped cream. Mommy gave her a little more after dinner.

This is our cousin, Toby. Bonnie is his Mom. He lived with us when he was little, until he became a world traveler and moved to Germany for a while. Now he lives in his own house near us with his mom and dad and Brandon, and his furry brother Montagno.

Here is Tocchet. I have had him since the day he was born, March 17, 1992. Cheyenne was his Momma, and she was pregnant when I got her. She had 4 kittens and sadly, 3 died. I just had to keep him. He is a big, sweet ball of fur. He is also called the bionic kitty because of a steel plate in his leg from a broken leg when he was little.

This is Ariel. She will be 2 in December. My daughter Cassie adopted her to keep Jasmine company in Gainesville. Jasmine did not like her, so Cassie adopted Baby Boy to keep Ariel company. When Cassie was going on vacation, we kitty-sat for Ariel, and she decided to stay [Cassie said it was OK]. Ariel and Lemieux are perfect playmates - same age and size. Ariel is the good girl - never an ounce of trouble. Every everning she gets her 'Mommy time'. She jumps up on my lap to watch tv and keep me sitting still.

Yes, her name is pronounced La-mew. It means 'the best'. I adopted her from an organization at our local Petsmart. I have volunteered with them ever since, because I know I can never completely repay them for her.

She is the softest cat I have ever touched, different completely than any other, like running your hand across a piec of satin.
